Emily Sierra

Mezzo-soprano

  • Rising star Cuban-American mezzo-soprano Emily Sierra was a finalist of the international Operalia competition 2022, a grand finals winner in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions 2021, and a finalist of the Premiere Opera + NYIOP Vocal competition 2020.


    Highlights of Sierra’s 2023/24 season include making her house and role debut as Stéphano in Gounod Romeo et Juliette at the Dallas Opera and making her role debut as Idamante in Mozart Idomeneo at the Bayerische Staatsoper, where she will also join the Ensemble for roles across the season including Fjodor in Mussorgsky Boris Godunov, Alisa in Donizetti Lucia di Lammermoor, Clotilde in Bellini Norma, Tisbe in Rossini La Cenerentola, Annina in Verdi La traviata and Dritte Magd in Strauss Elektra. On the concert platform, Sierra will join the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra to perform the role of Zweite Magd in Elektra under the baton of Kirill Petrenko.

  • Recent role highlights of Sierra's two years on the Bayerische Staatsoper Studio include Hänsel in Humperdinck Hänsel und Gretel, Nanni in Haydn L'infedeltà delusa, Un musico in Puccini Manon Lescaut, Soeur Mathilde in Poulenc Dialogues des Carmelites and Kate Pinkerton in Puccini Madama Butterfly. Other recent operatic highlights include her debut with English National Opera in the Theatre Royal Stratford East production as a Gossip in Britten’s Noye’s Fludde and joining the prestigious Vocal Residency of the Académie du Festival d’Aix-en-Provence 2021, alongside performances in Neumarkt in der Oberpfalz in conjunction with the renowned Internationale Meistersinger Akademie summer program of 2021.


    On the concert platform, Sierra has performed as a soloist in Handel Messiah at the Royal Albert Hall, and Cloride in Handel Parnasso in festa at the Wigmore Hall with the London Handel Festival, alongside appearances at the Boston Symphony Hall and Curtiss Hall in Chicago.

    Sierra has studied internationally, including the Sherill Milnes VOICE Program in Georgia, and Si Parla Si Canta in Italy. She is a recent graduate of the Julliard School and the Royal College of Music International Opera Studio, where she was recipient of the 2019 President’s Award.
