Symphony

  • Founded in 1946 as the RIAS-Symphonie-Orchester by Radio in the American Sector (RIAS), the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin’s first Principal Conductor Ferenc Fricsay set standards in repertoire, sound ideal and media presence from its inception. Music of the 20th century immediately became a programming staple, in addition to interpretations of the classical repertoire characterised by transparency, structural conciseness and plasticity and this continues today.

    Intermusica has worked with Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin since 2009 and taken the orchestra on significant tours including to the Edinburgh International Festival, BBC Proms and tours in Spain and Italy.

  • The DSO’s symphony concerts in the Berliner Philharmonic Hall are recorded by Deutschlandradio Kultur and by the rbb Kulturradio, and are regularly broadcast in Germany and throughout Europe and beyond.

    The DSO is also globally present with numerous prize-winning CD recordings. In 2011 it received the Grammy Award for the world premiere recording of Kaija Saariaho’s opera L’amour de loin, conducted by Kent Nagano. Among other CD publications of recent years, recordings with Ingo Metzmacher on Phoenix Edition, Christoph Eschenbach on Capriccio and with Yutaka Sado on Challenge Classics stand out.

    Over and above its concerts in Berlin, the DSO is active in international music life with numerous guest appearances. Concert tours have led the orchestra to Russia, Asia, North and South America and Lebanon. In recent years it has given guest performances in Brazil and Argentina, in Japan, China, Malaysia and Abu Dhabi, and a number of tour concerts in Eastern Europe in an ongoing collaboration with Deutsche Welle and the German Federal Foreign Office.

Sokhiev and Berezovsky
Europe, October 2013
Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin gives three performances in Europe with Tugan Sokhiev at the helm as Music Director, presenting all-Russian programmes.

Repertoire includes Prokofiev's Scythian Suite, Shostakovich's Suite from The Golden Age for the Bratislava and Zagreb performances, and Stravinsky's Firebird Suite (1919) in Udine.

Each concert will showcase two Russian piano concertos, Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No.1 and Shostakovich's Piano Concerto No.2, performed by the 1990 Tchaikovsky Competition Gold Medal winner, Boris Berezovsky.

Spain with Jean-Yves Thibaudet
Europe, February 2013
Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin tour Spain to perform concerts with conductor James Conlon.

The tour starts in Oviedo where the orchestra will perform Dvořák Symphony No.9 in E minor From the New World as well as an arrangement by Conlon himself: Shostakovich’s Suite from Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk. 

The orchestra then travel to San Sebastian where they will be joined by pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet, who will perform Bernstein’s Symphony No.2 The Age of Anxiety for Piano and Orchestra at the remaining three concerts.

BBC Proms
Europe, August 2010
Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin travels to the BBC Proms with Ingo Metzmacher for a performance of Mahler Symphony No.7 and Schreker Nachtstück from Der Ferne Klang.

Following on from its successful major European tour this Spring, Kavakos will rejoin the orchestra at the Proms to perform Korngold’s Violin Concerto.
