London Mozart Players

Chamber

  • Founded in 1949 by Harry Blech as the UK’s first chamber orchestra, the London Mozart Players has achieved international renown for its concert performances and CD recordings of the core Classical repertoire. The Oxford Times commented on a recent performance: “Polished and meticulous playing from the London Mozart Players… every note a rediscovered treasure.”

  • Principal Conductor Gérard Korsten continues the strong Classical tradition begun by Blech, and developed by past Music Directors including Jane Glover and Matthias Bamert, and Conductor Laureate, Howard Shelley, continues a 25 year association with the LMP.

In addition to core Classical repertoire, the LMP plays an active part in contemporary music, giving many world premières and commissioning new works by, in recent years, Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, Tarik O’Regan and Sally Beamish, and in March 2011 appointed Roxanna Panufnik as Associate Composer. In addition to their mainstage concerts in London at St John’s Smith Square, and Fairfield Halls, Croydon, the orchestra is engaged in an extensive and highly regarded education, community and audience development programme, working in several outer-London boroughs, as well as in rural areas across the UK.

Touring has been a major part of the orchestra’s schedule, and Intermusica is delighted to have toured the orchestra to China in May 2014 for four concerts, which were regarded by the musicians as a series of concerts that “transformed” the orchestra.

Past tour
China debut
Asia, May 2014
Intermusica tours the London Mozart Players to China for four performances with conductor Gérard Korsten and an all-Mozart programme.

The musicians also documented the tour online and their experiences of each concert. Playing to a sold-out hall at Beijing’s National Centre for Performing Arts was a particular highlight: “the atmosphere is electric and the orchestra responds. Jetlagged, dehydrated and knackered the players are magnificent.”

While each night of the tour saw the orchestra perform to an audience of different characteristics, the number of children at each concert was striking and something the players said was “wonderful to see”.

At the end of the tour, the musicians reflected on a series of concerts that “transformed” the orchestra:

“The musicians are tired but happy. Everyone has played an important part in its success. The tour has transformed the orchestra. It’s given it confidence and enthusiasm for the future. LMP is back in business and it’s here to stay. A new management, a new vision and a sense of purpose...
The team at Intermusica, especially the wonderful Erin and Grace, took it all in their stride. Calm, good humoured and comfortable in the company of tired, emotional musicians they were consummate professionals. Thank you Intermusica, we love you! Can we do it again please...?”
