Europa Galante

  • Europa Galante was founded in 1990 by its musical director and internationally acclaimed violinist Fabio Biondi, and quickly established itself as the foremost Italian period instrument ensemble, breathing new life into baroque and classical repertoire. The ensemble specialised initially in the Italian composers of the 17th and 18th centuries and, following the release of its first record dedicated to Vivaldi concertos, the ensemble has received worldwide recognition, consistently gaining the highest level of critical acclaim including the including the Diapason d'Or de l’Année and Choc de Musique. Europa Galante now performs a variety of well-known repertoire and unearths hidden gems from Handel opera to Bach orchestral suites, Rossini opera to the chamber music of Boccherini.

Intermusica has toured Europa Galante since 2012 when the ensemble toured Mexico as part of Festival Cervantino. Since then together they have travelled to give performances in Russia, China, Korea and Japan for staged productions of Vivaldi’s L’Oracolo in Messenia, Europa Galante’s recording of which received the Diapason D’Or.

L'Oracolo in Messenia
Europe, Asia, February-March 2015
Europa Galante brings a concert version of Vivaldi's L’Oracolo in Messenia to London and fully staged production to Yokohama, Japan before finishing at the Hong Kong Arts Festival.

First performed in 1738 in Venice, L’Oracolo in Messenia was assembled by Vivaldi for the famously extravagant and subversive Venice carnival. The lost scores have been pieced together by Biondi from rare and forgotten manuscripts as well as published scores and brought to life by a cast including Magnus Staveland, Marianne Beate Kielland, Vivica Genaux, Franziska Gottwald and Julia Lezhneva.

In contrast to this tale of love, revenge and corruption, Europa Galante also presents Vivaldi’s Four Seasons in Birmingham, Tokyo and Matsumoto featuring mezzo-soprano Genaux.

On departure from Japan, the ensemble travels to the Hong Kong Arts Festival for a recital by Biondi, accompanied by harpsichordist Paola Poncet. In addition is a performance based on Europa Galante’s latest CD release, Chiara’s Diary, which received a five-star review in BBC Music Magazine. The programme brings together a collection of concertos dedicated to Chiara, a young woman left on the steps of Ospedale della Pietá as a baby who subsequently studied violin at the orphanage and music school in Venice. Europa Galante’s programme focuses on Venetian composers works written for Chiara and is accompanied by a short film, telling Chiara’s story alongside musical excerpts performed by Europa Galante.
