Symphony

  • The BBC Symphony Orchestra (BBC SO) has played a central role at the heart of British musical life since its inception in 1930. It provides the backbone of the BBC Proms, performing around a dozen concerts at the festival every year, including the First and Last Nights. Intermusica has toured the BBC SO since 1998, to countries including Spain, Monaco and Switzerland.

  • The BBC SO has a strong commitment to 20th century and contemporary music and has commissioned and given premiere performances throughout its history, including most recently works by Esa-Pekka Salonen and Colin Matthews.

    Conductors that work regularly with the BBC SO include Sakari Oramo who holds the post of Principal Conductor, Semon Bychkov and Conductors Laureate Sir Andrew Davis and Jiří Bělohlávek.

    The BBC SO is committed to innovative education work and we aim to bring some of these projects to the Orchestra’s international touring.

Europe, March 2019
Intermusica tours the BBC Symphony Orchestra to Monte Carlo to appear at the Festival Printemps des Arts in March 2019.

Since it was founded by Princess Grace of Monaco in 1970, the Festival Printemps des Arts de Monte-Carlo has welcomed some of the biggest names in music and continues to grow and evolve, giving audiences to opportunity to enjoy a rich cultural offering each year. 

This year, the BBC Symphony Orchestra will be joined by conductor Peter Eötvös and violinist Renaud Capuçon in a celebration of the music of Bartok, including his Concerto of Orchestra in addition to the violin concerti Nos. 1 and 2.

Printemps des Arts de Monte-Carlo
Europe, March 2015
One of the headline performances of the festival, the BBC SO make their debut at the Printemps des Arts in Monte-Carlo.

Led by Finnish conductor Sakari Oramo, the orchestra performs Symphony No.5 by Sibelius, in celebration of the 150th anniversary of the composer’s birth.

The performance includes another one of Sibelius’ key pieces, Pohjola’s Daughter along with famous melodies sung by soprano Soile Isokosi.

Europe, October 2014
Following a successful 2011 tour, the orchestra returned to Spain in October 2014, with Sakari Oramo.

The four-concert tour begins at the Auditorio Alicante, followed by performances at Kursaal Auditorio San Sebastian, Auditorio del Palacio de Congresos de Zaragoza and the Auditorio Nacional de Madrid.

The orchestra performs two major works under the baton of chief conductor Sakari Oramo: Stravinsky Firebird Suite (1945 version) and Shostakovich Symphony No.5 in D minor.

The orchestra is joined by piano soloist Javier Perianes, an artist with “virtuosity to burn” (Palm Beach Arts Paper, November 2013) and in high demand at festivals across Spain, performing Ravel Piano Concerto in G major and Grieg Piano Concerto in alternating concerts.

Switzerland with Leonidas Kavakos
Europe, April 2014
The BBC Symphony Orchestra and Principal Conductor Sakari Oramo are joined by Intermusica's Leonidas Kavakos for a tour of Switzerland.

Performing in Zurich, St Gallen, Berne and Geneva the concerts featured Kavakos as soloist, playing the Brahms and Sibelius violin concertos. Also in the programme is a work by award winning Swiss composer Dieter Ammann, Boost, written in 2000 for the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra. Soprano Anu Komsi joins the BBC SO for Mahler Symphony No.4 in Zurich and St Gallen.

The concerts in Zurich and Berne are recorded for future broadcast on BBC Radio 3.

Beethovenfest Bonn
Europe, September 2011
Following a successful season at the BBC Proms, the BBC Symphony Orchestra travel to Germany to perform at the renowned Beethovenfest Bonn.

The orchestra, under Sylvain Cambreling and featuring German violinist Carolin Widmann, perform the world premiere of Rebecca Saunders’s Violin Concerto which has been specially commissioned for the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Carolin Widmann by the festival and BBC Radio 3.

The programme also includes Weber’s overture to Oberon and Mahler’s fourth symphony, which features the 2009 winner of the Kathleen Ferrier competition soprano Sarah-Jane Brandon.

Opening concert of the Berlin Festival
Europe, September 2009
The BBC Symphony Orchestra travels to Germany to give the opening concert of the Berlin Festival.

Conducted by David Robertson and with soloists Colin Currie and Leigh Melrose, the Orchestra performs a programme of Shostakovich Symphony No.9, Rachmaninov’s Isle of the Dead and two works by Xenakis, Ais and Nomos Gamma, in which the majority of the orchestra is dispersed among the audience.
