Les Siècles

Symphony

  • Les Siècles are a period orchestra famed for their aim of performing each and every piece of music as it would have been performed at its premiere. Founded in 2003 by François-Xavier Roth, the orchestra employ the use of both period and modern instruments to bring authenticity, as well as originality to their performances.

Fresh ideas and a dynamic approach to music making have seen the orchestra's reputation on the global musical scene grow quickly.

Intermusica begins its relationship with Les Siècles on a tour to Asia in 2018 featuring works premiered in Paris.

Past tour
Homage to Nijinsky
Asia, June 2018
Homage to Nijinsky re-creates the choreography of one of the great artistic figures of the early twentieth century, Vaslav Nijinsky. Les Siècles will be joined by dance company Association du 48 for performances throughout Asia.

Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring will feature in the tour, combined in performances with Debussy’s L’Après-midi d’un faune and Jeux, in the 100th anniversary of Debussy’s death.

Drawing on a multitude of sources from the period, choreographer Dominique Brun has re-created Nijinsky’s original choreography. Her version stands unique from those that have gone before it in the last century; the visceral and primitive qualities that shocked audiences over one hundred years ago ever present in these compelling pieces.

Performing the scores for Nijinsky’s choreography is François-Xavier Roth’s Les Siècles. With a vast period-instrument collection at its disposal, including many of the original instruments played by musicians of the Ballets Russes in the 1910s, the ensemble’s flexible and historically informed approach delivers the authentic accompaniment to this immersive experience of musical Paris in the 1910s.
