Soprano

  • Soprano Verity Wingate is fast establishing herself as one of Europe’s most promising young stars, renowned for her “vocally and theatrically breathtaking performances” (Trouw) and her “luminous soprano” (Peter Hagmann).

  • In 2024/25, Wingate will return to the Bühnen Bern for Tatyana Eugene Onegin conducted by Anna Sułkowska-Migoń and will make her Bayerische Staatsoper house debut in the role of Wellgunde Das Rheingold conducted by Vladimir Jurowski. On the concert platform, Wingate will perform Mahler Symphony No. 8 with Tonkünstler Orchestra, Dvořák Stabat Mater at Canterbury Cathedral and Southwark Cathedral and Brahms Requiem with Academy of St Martin in the Fields.

Last season highlights included a series of debuts at Oper Frankfurt and Komische Oper Berlin, as Contessa d’Almaviva Le nozze di Figaro, at Staatsoper Hamburg as Micaëla Carmen and her Edinburgh International Festival debut as Contessa d’Almaviva in Kirill Sebrennikov's production of Le nozze di Figaro.

Recently, Wingate made her role and house debut as Contessa d’Almaviva Le nozze di Figaro for Malmö Opera to much critical acclaim: “Wingate’s warm soprano soars with the orchestra’s air under her wings. Then time stands still not only on stage but in the auditorium” (Sydsvenskan). She made her role and house debut as the title role in Tchaikovsky Iolanta at Bühnen Bern under the baton of Nicholas Carter, for which her performance has been noted as giving “goosebumps moments” (Die Junge Buehne) and “an impressive, youthful Iolanta” (Jungfrau Zeitung).

Other highlights include her debut with the English National Opera as Mrs. Naidoo in Philip Glass Satyagraha and the roles of Mimi La bohème (Nederlandse Reisopera) and the Governess The Turn of the Screw (Garsington Opera). On the concert stage, highlights have included recitals, galas and concerts at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Leipzig Gewandhaus, Lincoln Center, Barbican Centre, Wigmore Hall, St. John’s Smith Square, St. Martin-in-the-Fields, Holywell Music Room Oxford, and Aldeburgh Festival.

Wingate is an alumna of the Opera Studio at Dutch National Opera, where roles included Anna Nabucco (alongside Anna Pirozzi) and Luisa Casati Stampa di Soncino in the world premiere of Willem Jeths Ritratto (BBC Music Magazine’s Opera Choice for February 2021). In 2021, Wingate was selected for the Salzburg Festival Young Singers Project, where she performed the role of Die Schleppträgerin in Krzysztof Warlikowski’s production of Elektra conducted by Franz Welser-Möst and won second prize at the prestigious Hans Gabor Belvedere Singing Competition.

“Verity Wingate’s portrayal of the Governess’s ambiguous, repressed desires was a triumph.”
