Anna Stéphany

Mezzo-soprano

  • Anglo-French mezzo-soprano Anna Stéphany has been praised for her stagecraft and “a superb, glowing, impassioned” voice. Stéphany was born in the North East of England and studied at the Guildhall School of Music, where she was a recipient of the Gold Medal, and the National Opera Studio. She represented England at the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World and is a Kathleen Ferrier Award winner.

  • In the 2024-25 season, Stéphany's highlights include Berlioz L’Enfance du Christ with the Narodowe Forum Muzyki at the Berlioz Festival La-Côte-Saint-André, Zemlinsky Lieder von Nacht und Traum with the Tapiola Sinfonietta conducted by Clemens Schuldt and Bach Christmas Oratorio conducted by Gianluca Capuano with Monte Carlo Opera. She also appears at the Klosters Music Festival with the Munich Chamber Orchestra performing Haydn Nelson Mass under the baton of Enrico Onofri. 
     
    Stéphany's recent highlights include her Berlin Staatsoper debut as Idamante in David McVicar’s production of Idomeneo, a return to the Royal Opera House as Hansel Hansel and Gretel conducted by Mark Wigglesworth, and Cherubino Le nozze di Figaro for the Semperoper Dresden. In concert she joined the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Nathalie Stutzmann for Bruckner Te Deum, RIAS Kammerchor and the Freiburger Barockorchester for Haydn Masses, and performed Mendelssohn Elijah with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra conducted by Maxim Emelyanychev. She also appeared at the 2024 Edinburgh International Festival for Boulanger Psalm 130, with the Hallé Orchestra conducted by Sir Mark Elder, and for a performance. 
     
    Stéphany was a member of the ensemble at Opernhaus Zürich from 2012-15, where she made her debut as Cherubino in Mozart Le nozze di Figaro. Further roles in Zürich include Dorabella in Così fan tutte, Siebel in Gounod Faust, Nicklausse in Offenbach Les contes d’Hoffmann and Minerva in Monteverdi Il Ritorno d’Ulisse in Patria. Her close relationship with the house continued with guest appearances as Sesto La Clemenza di Tito, a new production of Purcell King Arthur, Romeo I Capuleti e i Montecchi and Charlotte Werther.  
     
    One of her most coveted roles is Octavian in Strauss Der Rosenkavalier, which she sang at the Bolshoi Theatre, the Royal Swedish Opera, and with which she made her house debut at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. Most recently, Stéphany has been heard in her role and company debut at the Opéra National de Paris as Le Prince Charmant Cendrillon, Cherubino Le nozze di Figaro for her company debut at the Semperoper Dresden under the baton of Carlo Rizzi and in a return to the Royal Opera House, Opernhaus Zürich as Idamante Idomeneo, Octavian Der Rosenkavalier and Hänsel Hänsel und Gretel, the Bayersiche Staatsoper as Dorabella Così fan Tutte and in a return to the Glyndebourne Festival for her debut as Sesto in David McVicar’s acclaimed production of Giulio Cesare.  
     
    Further appearances have included the role of Sesto in a live-streamed concert performance of La Clemenza di Tito, recorded with the Opéra de Rouen in collaboration with Alpha Classics, Rosina in Rossini Il barbiere di Siviglia at Théâtre du Châtelet, Paris; Annio in Mozart La clemenza di Tito at the Aix-en-Provence Festival; Handel Theodora with Rias Kammerchor and the title role in Charpentier Médée at Chicago Opera. She made her debut at the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich stepping in as Annio in La Clemenza di Tito and returned the following summer as La Musica and Speranza in Monteverdi L’Orfeo. She made her debut at the Glyndebourne Festival as Sesto La Clemenza di Tito, which also formed part of the 2017 BBC Proms.  
     
    On the concert platform Stéphany has appeared with some of the world’s finest orchestras including performances of Messiah alongside the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Rossini Stabat Mater and Beethoven Symphony No. 9 with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Irene Theodora with early music ensemble Arcangelo at the Barbican Centre, in Antwerp, and at the Mozarteum Salzburg, Elijah with Orquesta y Coro Nacionales de España and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment under the baton of Masaaki Suzuki, a recorded concert performance of Mendelssohn Le Songe d’une nuit d’été with the Orchestra National de France at the Auditorium de Radio France, a tour of Beethoven 9 with the London Symphony Orchestra, Elgar The Dream of Gerontius with the Gabrieli Consort & Players, Berlioz Les nuits d’été with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Cesti Orontea with La Nuova Musica at Wigmore Hall, Mozart Requiem with Mozarteum Salzburg, folk songs by Berio with the Mediterranean Youth Orchestra as part of the Festival D'Aix-en-Provence, Elgar Sea Pictures with the Bremer Philharmoniker, St Matthew Passion with the Handel & Haydn Society/Harry Christophers, La damoiselle élue with the Philharmonia Orchestra/Esa-Pekka Salonen, and a programme of Handel in New York, London and Paris with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment/William Christie in a tribute to Lorraine Hunt Lieberson. She made two appearances at the 2018 BBC Proms season, La damoiselle élue with the Hallé Orchestra and Sir Mark Elder, and performed Le Martyre de St Sebastian with the Deutsches Symphonie Orchester Berlin, L’enfant et les Sortileges with the London Symphony Orchestra and Sir Simon Rattle, L’enfance du Christ, with the Orchestre de Chambre de Paris for and Berlioz Roméo et Juliette with Orchestra XXI. Stéphany has also given recitals at the Lammermuir Festival and in Zürich, both with pianist Sholto Kynoch.  
     
    Stéphany's debut solo recording Black is the Colour with the Labyrinth Ensemble was released in 2018 on Alpha Classics. Featuring works by Luciano Berio, Falla and Ravel, the disc won critical acclaim. Other recordings include the title role in Handel Serse with Christian Curnyn and the Early Opera Company for Hyperion. Stéphany also appears alongside Juan Diego Florez as Charlotte in a DVD of Opernhaus Zürich’s Werther and as Sesto in Glyndebourne’s recent DVD release of La Clemenza di Tito from the 2017 festival.
