Claire Barnett-Jones

Last season, Barnett-Jones made three successful company debuts at Canada’s Calgary Opera as Witch & Gertrude in Humperdinck’s Hansel & Gretel conducted by Jonathan Brandani, with the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome performing Waltraute in a staged production of Wagner’s Die Walküre conducted by Daniel Harding and at the Bregenzer Festspiele as Annina in a new production of Verdi’s La Traviata conducted by Kirill Karabits. She also performed Mrs Grose in Britten’s The Turn of the Screw at the Royal Ballet & Opera’s Linbury Theatre directed by Natalie Abrahami and conducted by Bassem Akiki.

Previous opera appearances include Mrs Sedley in Britten’s Peter Grimes for Dutch National Opera, Forester’s Wife/Owl in Janáček’s The Cunning Little Vixen for the Bayerische Staatsoper, Second Norn in Wagner's Götterdämmerung and Waltraute in Die Walküre, both in Barry Kosky’s new production for Covent Garden and at the Bayreuther Festspiele. She has performed Jezibaba in Dvořák’s Rusalka for the Théâtre du Capitole de Toulouse, Frika in Die Walküre for the Tiroler Festspiele Erl, Mescalina in Ligeti’s Le Grand Macabre and Madame Flora in Menotti’s The Medium for Oper Frankfurt, Eurydice the Myth/Persephone in Birtwistle’s The Mask of Orpheus, Rossweisse/cover Fricka in The Valkyrie and Lapák in The Cunning Little Vixen for English National Opera, cover Mistress Quickly in Falstaff and 2nd Noble Orphan in Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalier for Glyndebourne Festival Opera, Annina in La Traviata for Glyndebourne Touring Opera, 3rd Lady in Mozart's The Magic Flute for Welsh National Opera and Gaea in Strauss’s Daphne for Scottish Opera.

Recent concert highlights include Mahler’s Das klagende Lied with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Ryan Bancroft, Mozart’s Requiem at London’s Barbican Centre with the BBC Symphony Orchestra conducted by Oramo Sakari, Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius at King’s College Cambridge with the BBC Concert Orchestra conducted by Daniel Hyde, Berg’s Altenberg Lieder and Mahler’s Kindertotenlieder in Espoo, Finland with the Tapiola Sinfonietta conducted by Ryan Bancroft and appearances with the Philadelphia Orchestra in a gala concert and covering Brangäne in Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde conducted by Yannick Nézet-Séguin. She has performed Beethoven’s Mass in C with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Barena/Pastuchnya in Janáček’s Jenůfa with the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Sir Simon Rattle, Wagner’s Wesendonck Lieder with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Second Norn in Götterdämmerung with the London Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Vladimir Jurowski and Sosostris in Tippett’s The Midsummer Marriage with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and Edward Gardner.

Barnett-Jones has given recitals at Snape Maltings, the Ludlow English Song Festival and London’s Wigmore Hall with pianist Iain Burnside and has toured the UK with pianist Rebecca Cohen and with pianist Sholto Kynoch as part of the Oxford International Song Festival’s autumn touring season.

Barnett-Jones studied at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, Royal Academy Opera and Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and is a recipient of the Sir John Tomlinson Fellowship as well as being an Independent Opera Fellow and a Samling Artist.
