Leonhard Baumgartner

Violin

  • Born in Vienna in 2007, Baumgartner made his debut performance with Wiener Symphoniker at the age of fifteen. Since then, he has established himself as a soloist with renowned orchestras such as Dresden Philharmonic, Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg, NFM Wrocław Philharmonic, Wiener Kammerorchester, Berlin Baroque Soloists, Munich Symphony Orchestra, and Württembergisches Kammerorchester Heilbronn.

  • Future engagements include his Australian debut with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra and Eivind Aadland, as well as return visits to the Wiener Symphoniker and NFM Wrocław Philharmonic, and recital engagements at the Wiener Musikverein, and Wiener Konzerthaus.


    In August 2024, Leonhard Baumgartner won the Eurovision Young Musicians Competition, making his debut with the Norwegian Radio Orchestra under the baton of Eivind Aadland. In October 2024, Baumgartner played first violin in Deutsche Grammophon’s world premiere recording of Mozart’s newly discovered Serenade K648 recorded in Salzburg. 


    Baumgartner has won prizes and earned top honours at international competitions including 1st Prize and Special Prize at the Ilona Fehér International Violin Competition, 1st Prize at the Zhuhai International Mozart Competition and the 1st Prize, Grand Prix and Audience Award at the Osaka International Music Competition. Additionally, he was awarded the Carl Flesch Prize in Baden-Baden and the Discovery Award at ICMA International Classical Music Awards.


    Baumgartner’s musical studies have led him to prestigious institutions in Munich, Graz and Vienna, where he currently studies with Professor Dora Schwarzberg at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna and Professor Ingolf Turban at Hochschule für Musik und Theater München. He is a scholar of the Music Academy Liechtenstein, performing frequently in concerts with Liechtenstein Symphony Orchestra and Ensemble Esperanza.


    Baumgartner plays on an Antonio Stradivari violin, ex Petherick (Cremona, 1683), on generous loan from a member of the Stretton Society, which also supports his studies through the Nina Gscheider & Florian Schwarz Scholarship and his representation by Intermusica.
